custom placeables in Wordfast Pro

hello,

i'm using Wordfast Pro 2.4.2 and was wondering how or whether it was possible to define my own custom placeables.

i currently have a file with many pieces of code between angle brackets that should not be translated and i would like Wordfast to treat them as placeables.

in other CAT tools this is easily done using regular expressions to define cutom placeables.

is there any way to do this in wordfast? or am i stuck copy pasting these manually?

i would really appreciate any help on this matter,

cheers

Workaround Mar 4, 2012

As far as I know you can't do this from within WFP, but if you are working with a Word file you can use a workaround

WFP considers "Hidden" text in Word to be untranslateable, so you need to mark all the text between angle brackets as "Hidden", a simple search and replace will do this for you:

Make sure "Use wildcards" is selected

In "Find what" type: (Can't get the post to show these symbols properly so I am writing the names of the symbols you have to type) You need to write "back slash" "left angle bracket" "asterisk" "back slash" "right angle bracket"

And in "Replace with" don't type anything, click on it so the cursor is there and then click on "Format", then click on "Font" and click on "Hidden" (you might have to click on in twice until the mark appears). Save the Word file and open with WFP, now the hidden text won't appear.

Once you've finished and have reconstructed the Word file simple get rid of the "Hidden" format.

using Excel files Mar 5, 2012

thanks for the reply. too bad such a simple feature is not available and needs to be "worked around".
in any case, my source files are Excel files if that makes any difference.

Agree Mar 5, 2012

Yes I agree it is a shame they don't have an easy way to do this.

Sorry to say I don't know how you can do it using Excel, I suggest you contact WF support they might be able to offer a solution.

Excel Tags Mar 5, 2012

Wordfast Pro DOES have a "Regular Expression" option available during opening Excel files, but this requires knowing how to formulate the expression required for marking specific parts as placeables.

On more than one occasion, I have offered examples:

Hi Rokabard,

Paste ]*> in the box when you get to the regular expression part of the advanced wizard.

BTW, to the developers, it would be a smart idea to include the following text in the wizard:

Regular expressions are used for excluding HTML codes or rather for converting them into "placeables". HTML codes should be entered separated by | a pipe sign.

For example:

|

... or for any tag you can just enter:

]*>

tried it before but maybe i should again Mar 5, 2012

yes, i have tried the excel files filter option with regular expressions, but it didn't seem to do anything - perhaps because the excel file has already been opened and converted. i suppose i could open it again and import what i've done so far back from the TM. i will try that.

thanks.

Codes at ProZ Mar 5, 2012

Dear John,

I am afraid ProZ forums do not allow typing html codes as text, that is why I have entered the link to my message at Yahoo, you generously quoted.

I think the way to enter codes correctly is to use the following (without spaces):

& l t ; and & g t ;

So, here I am trying enter the quote again in the correct way:

Dear Ali,

As for the Regular Expression, you can ignore it if your file does not include any html codes; just click "Finish".

In general, the Regular Expression of the Excel Advanced Wizard is for excluding HTML codes or rather for converting them into "placeables". HTML codes should be entered separated by | a pipe sign.

For example:

<b>|</b>|<p>|</p>

... or for any tag you can just enter:

<[^>]*>

Again, if your file does NOT include any HTML codes, just leave it empty and click "Finish".

HTH,
Yasmin

Kind regards,
Yasmin

Thanks Yasmin! Mar 5, 2012

Thanks Yasmin, as always, you save the day

Rokabard, yes, you have to delete the TXML file that was originally created after the initial import and try again!

I just made a short video showing how to use regular expressions with text in Excel that contain HTML tags:
