Hello everyone,

I'm hoping that someone can help me with a problem that's recently cropped up.

I'm using Wordfast Classic 5.53q with Word 2002 and Windows XP. I was having no problems at all. However, the Context Search tool has suddenly simply stopped working. Whatever I ask it, it returns an answer of "No contexts found for xxx", even when I know very well that the word / phrase in question has previously occurred and even when I can find it and see it there, clear as day, if I open the TM in Notepad. It's not just a question of one TM, either; it happens with every TM I use, old and new alike.

This happens when I use the Context Search icon on the Wordfast toolbar. On the kind advice of a friend, I've also tried to carry out a context search via the keyboard shortcut route (Control+Alt+C). When I do that, the word / phrase in question is turned into the Polish ć (c with a left-right accent over it). This happens no matter whether I use the right Alt or the left in the combination, although only the left Alt provides me with the Polish diacritics normally.

I haven't changed any settings at all, neither in Wordfast nor in Word, so I have no idea why this has suddenly occurred. The only thing that's changed is that, in September, I renewed my licence and the problem began after that. I didn't download anything, I simply renewed the licence, but could that have had any bearing on the sudden emergence of the problem?

I'm slowly moving over to a different computer and Windows 7, although the move is somewhat hampered by the fact that it keeps rejecting Wordfast as a virus ... I have Security Essentials installed there. But that's an issue for a different thread, I guess.

However, until the move is complete, this lack of context search is quite a problem ... and anyway, I would like to be able to use the current computer as a back-up in the future. So I really do need to try and solve the issue.

Can anyone help ... please?

With sincere and hopeful thanks in advance,
Caryl

You would want to have a look at this thread. If you proceed as indicated, you should be able to download, install and use Wordfast without problems. Just in case, you can find detailed installation instructions for the current version of Wordfast Classic here.

First of all, 5.53q is very old (more than six years). I do remember there were issues with that function (called context search back then, now it's concordance search) under certain conditions, for instance related to the size of TM's (didn't work with TM's that were too small). However, I believe it's a waste of time trying to solve the problem for that version: just upgrade to the current version, which most likely will work exactly as advertised.

This is another problem, related to keyboard shortcut conflicts. There are solutions to that kind of problems. You basically need to either unassign the shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+C) used to get the Polish ć, or to assign another shortcut to Wordfast's context/concordance.

No, merely renewing the validity of your license (especially without changing the version you're using) won't affect the way Wordfast runs on your computer.
If Ctrl+Alt+C works at the system level ( to produce ć), you may have to use the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator utility. Be warned it's a bit tricky to use. I had to resort to it many years ago, when Ctrl+Alt+M would get me a µ (instead of calling Wordfast's Display TM).

Dear Dominique,

Thank you so much for your kind help and comprehensive replies. Please accept my sincere apologies for not replying for. There were reasons ... rather complex ones. However, my failure to respond with thanks at the time is inexcusable.

My humble apologies once again

Caryl
