As a newcomer to WordFast (version 4.22) I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to join (or shrink) and split segments with this CAT tool.
Example: When WF finds an abbreviation like "U.K." or "U.S.A." in the middle of a sentence, it usually splits that sentence on account of the "period" (followed by a space) that is placed at the end of such abbreviations. So how can I join or shrink the segments to "rebuild" the sentence?
And, in opposite situations, how can I split a sentence in 2 segments?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Luis Ferrand

Alt PageUp and Down Jan 24, 2005

Luís,

It's Alt+PageDown to Expand and Alt+PageUp to Shrink
(when sentence is segmented, t.i. when you're in the proces of translating/segmenting).

good luck

Wout-Jan

Check your segmenting settings Jan 24, 2005

Hi Luis

Example: When WF finds an abbreviation like "U.K." or "U.S.A." in the middle of a sentence, it usually splits that sentence on account of the "period" (followed by a space) that is placed at the end of such abbreviations. So how can I join or shrink the segments to "rebuild" the sentence?

to shrink a segment: ALT + Page Up
to join (or expand in WF lingo) two segments: ALT + Page Down

Normally the WF default is that an ESP followed by a space followed by a lower-letter case does not end a sentence. You should check your segmentation parameters (set up - segments). There's one there called something like "ESP + space + lowercase ends a segment" - is this ticked? If so, un-tick it. Also - why not download the latest version - WF 5.i (or similar) when you're first at it?

Hope this works.
Brigid

Force segment Jan 24, 2005

Another very useful feature, especially if you are dealing with a very messy source text, is the "force segment" (Shift+Alt+Down). You can select any piece of text and convert it into a segment.

Good luck!

Add common abbreviations to the list of abbreviations Jan 24, 2005

I wouldn't touch the default ESP settings. That could backfire later on. The logical step would be to add the abbreviation to the list of abbreviations by selecting it including the dot and pushing Alt+T.

Wordfast will add the abbreviation to the list of abbreviations and will resegment right away.

Regards,
Gerard
