Dictation on Wordfast PRO 3.4.6 on a MacBook OS Maverick Thread poster: Lucia Messuti

Hello Collegues, I would like to start working with dictation. I've tried the built-in mic of MacBook and it is quite good except in Wordfast. I doesn't writein the segment. I start writing the first letter of the word I dictated, then it goes back and deletes it. I think the problem is Wordfast. Do you have any experience? Thanks Lucia

Thanks Lucia Hi Lucia, This is a known issue in WFP and the fix is in the third party tool that we use. Once they fix this will reflect in WFP but we don't know when this will happen. Thank you, John

I thought it was WFP problem. But this is not good, as other CATs, such as Trados and Studio, allow to use dictation without any problem. I think they have to think about it as dictation is widely used now. Thanks for your confirmation. Lucia
Older version | Jan 8, 2016 |
If dictation is critical to you, you could try to revert to an older version (one that didn’t include the newer component mentioned by John, which broke dictation). Mac dictation used to work in older versions: for instance, I made a video about it in August 2012, in which I used Wordfast Pro as an example (that part starts at 3:45): https://youtu.be/rvP-zTc4gMA?t=3m45s I... I don't think I can go back to an older version, as I don't know if this impacts my TMs, preferences, etc.... Do you plan to fix this in the future? Just another question, concerning WFP and Mac: may I upgrade to El Capitain or this will impact negatively my use of WFP? Thanks Lucia
Lucia Me wrote: I don't think I can go back to an older version, as I don't know if this impacts my TMs, preferences, etc.... It’s up to you, but AFAIK you should be able to revert to any version of WFP3: TMs etc. have kept the same format. Lucia Me wrote: Do you plan to fix this in the future? No idea, I’m not in charge of WFP development. As John said, the "culprit" is a third-party component used by WFP, so fixing it is not in Wordfast’s own hands. Lucia Me wrote: Just another question, concerning WFP and Mac: may I upgrade to El Capitain or this will impact negatively my use of WFP? There was one specific issue related to El Capitan, which was resolved with 3.4.6 and newer: http://www.proz.com/forum/wordfast_support/292808-wfp3_mac_users_hold_off_on_el_capitan.html Otherwise, it depends on the version of OS X you are currently using. If you’re upgrading from an older (less security-crazy) version of OS X, you may have to do refer to these two links: https://www.wordfast.net/wiki/Wordfast_Pro_3_for_OS_X_requires_Java_6 https://www.wordfast.net/wiki/Wordfast_Pro_3_can't_be_opened_because_it_is_from_an_unidentified_developer Actually, the first one may no longer be relevant with the latest WFP, which now uses Java 8 AFAIK.

Thanks Dominique for all your replies. By now, I'll wait before upgrading to El Capitain. And I'll see what happens with Wordfast 4. I downloaded the beta version and it is completely new, more similar to Studio, right? Maybe, WF 4 will allow me to use dictation. Lucia
