WFP 4/5 was first released in 2014, and was intended to replace WFP 3, but the initial public comments about that version were so negative that the Wordfast company decided to retain WFP 3 as a separate product.

AFAIK, there were never any plans to replace WFP3 with WFP4. WFP3 is still available, much like Microsoft supported Word 2003 for more than 10 years. However, far fewer development resources are dedicated to it since the release of WFP4. WFP3 is mostly in maintenance mode (bug fixes, minor improvements) and will continue to be supported for the foreseeable future.

WFP4 was short-lived and was replaced by WFP5. However, it was not as big a shift as it was from WFP3 to WFP4, which are completely different tools.

If WFC continues to suit your needs, why change? Each tool offers different benefits, so decide which are most important for you:

  • WFA: free, access from any computer or mobile device, easy to share TMs/glossaries/documents with other users
  • WFC: tried and true, user-friendly environment (WFC), highly customizable, dedicated support
  • WFP: runs on Mac, PC and Linux, handles more than 30 file formats, interoperable with other CAT tool XLIFF files, advanced QA system, project management capabilities, dedicated support
