WE'RE NOT HERE TO STEAL WORKERS FROM MICROSOFT," said Google's Yoelle Maarek. "But," she continued, grinning mischievously, "if they think they'll be happier with us, they're welcome."1 Only ten weeks earlier, Hezbollah missiles had been raining down on Haifa, home to the Google R&D center she headed. A few months later, Google opened a second research cen¬ter about an hour's drive south, in Tel Aviv.
Yoelle Maarek grew up in France, where she studied engineering, then earned her PhD in computer science at Columbia University and the Technion in Haifa. Before being tapped to head Google Israel's first R&D center, she worked at IBM Research for seven¬teen years, specializing in a field called "search" before Google existed and when the Internet was in its infancy.
To Maarek, the roots of search go deep into history. Scholars in the sixteenth century would consult a Bible concordance to see where Moses was mentioned and in which context. A concordance is "basically an index, which is the data structure that every search engine is using. Five centuries ago, people would do that manually.... As Israelis and as Jews, we are the people of the Book. We like to consult texts. We like to search," Maarek said.

Source text - English I am delighted to be here at Chatham House. This august institution has become a by-word for free and open debate. It is full of history, yet focused on the future. For nearly nine decades, speakers from around the globe have come to Chatham House to discuss their vision for shaping international affairs. So I can think of no better place to set out my vision for the future of NATO.
These days, it’s not easy to be an optimist. Indeed, we appear to be surrounded by professional pessimists. In the newspapers. On our television screens. In the blogs.
We see speculation that the euro could unravel and Europe could break up. Fears that the world is slowly but surely passing Europe by. And that as Europe looks inwards, our neighbours are turning away, and North America is looking elsewhere for friends and partners.
We see turmoil and uncertainty across the Middle East and North Africa. We witness the emergence of new powers -- economically, politically, and militarily. And we hear many commentators predict the decline of the West as we know it.
Translation - Macedonian Чест ми е да бидам тука во Четам Хаус. Оваа величествена институција стана синоним за слободна и отворена дебата. Полна е со историја, а сепак фокусирана на иднината. Речиси девет декади говорници од целата земја доаѓале во Четам Хаус за да дискутираат за нивната визија за оформување на меѓународните работи. Затоа, не можам да замислам подобро место да ја искажам мојата визија за иднината на НАТО.
Деновиве не е лесно да се биде оптимист. Навистина, изгледа како да сме опкружени со професионални песимисти. Во весниците. На нашите телевизиски екрани. На блоговите. Гледаме шпекулации дека еврото може да се распадне, а со тоа и Европа. Стравови дека светот полека, но сигурно ја одминува Европа.
