Dutch term or phrase: lijfrok
I am currently translating a text on the life of a famous Dutch Carmelite priest, and am having problems with the above term.

The context is as follows:

"Ik heb trachten aan te geven, dat deze hoogleraar op de eerste plaats medemens en medechristen is vanuit zijn innerlijkheid. Dit heb ik aangeduid vooreerst door een spelletje met de twee toga's. Zijn hoogleraarstoga van zijde en fluweel en tressen draagt hij over zijn linkerarm (waarmee tevens die zijkant van het beeld zich voegt in de straat-wand). Maar zijn eenvoudig habijt van Carmeliet is zijn lijfrok."

All suggestions welcome - Kudoz points will be rewarded within 72 hours.

Many thanks,

English translation:what he is most comfortable in
Explanation:
or 'what he finds most comfortable to wear'.

Literally, it is a (seamless) undergarment but I think it has a figurative meaning in this context.

I was torn between this answer and "ephod", but decided to award the points to Tina as I like the figurative meaning.

ephod

Explanation:
It was formerly also used as a penitential vestment, worn by pilgrims (Astesani Summæ Lib. V. Tit. xxxiv. Art. 1, Q. l), and the Carmelites sought to trace it back to the Hebrew Ephod
