No sé si hay que entender esta expresión en el sentido de "sin artificios". La frase entera es la siguiente:

Me parece que es bastante literal, en vez de figurado. Tiene que ser imparcial al describir a Satán, por lo que no dirá que es rojo (como generalmente nos lo imaginamos) ni tampoco le pondrá nombre alguno: diablo, satanás, etc.
