neutral  Clara Duarte: Suzy, dengue is a virus carried by a mosquito./Sorry...

-> Yes Clara I am very well aware that dengue is a virus. However I think the idea here is to explain that there are artificial breeding place for the mosquitos. Therefore a nursery.

disagree  Muriel Vasconcellos: I'm sorry Susy. I've been using "breeding sites" for over 30 y ears in connection with vector control.

-> Four other translators used everything but breeding sites..

disagree  Dr Sue Levy (X): the fact that 4 other translators answered something other than breeding sites suggests that they are just as ignorant of the topic//There is no shame in being ignorant - I'm ignorant about plenty of things - so I don't answer those questions

-> It's sad to see how poorly you think of your fellow colleagues to say they are "ignorant" on this topic. I don't really care if you disagreed with me or not. But have some common decency and don't offend people who try and give their BEST. Shame on you.

dengue mosquito nursery?

BOX 2-3 Environmental Eyesore or Mosquito Nursery?

Both! Discarded tires are an eyesore to most, but to some mosquitoes they offer an ideal location to deposit their eggs. Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus, both vectors of diseases such as dengue fever, viral encephalitis, and yellow fever, prefer to lay their eggs in water that collects in containers. Discarded tires, which hold water no matter in what position they land and which do not typically harbor predators like fish or frogs, are perfect incubators for the eggs of these mosquitoes

reservoirs

Explanation:
A dengue epidemic has been declared in 14 of the 23 federal states of Venezuela with more than 24,000 cases and 3 deaths, surpassing the 21,101 cases reported for all of 2000. The start of the rainy season is believed to be the main cause of the epidemic and the recent introduction of dengue virus serotype 3 into a population previously not exposed to this serotype. This year's water rationing in the main cities is also believed to have contributed to the outbreak as many containers for water collection abound, serving as potential mosquito reservoirs (ProMED (1) ProMED (2) ProMED (3)). http://iri.columbia.edu/climate/cid/Sep2001/impacts.html

The gardens of the hotel are perfectly maintained, but again, the fountains in the gardens are not running, turning the nice ponds into mosquito reservoirs.

Actually, was going to put "breeding grounds" first, as it seems nmore natural, and see it's used here:

Aedes albopictus, espécie que conserva hábitos silvestres, mas também coloniza criadouros artificiais.

Aedes albopictus, a species that keeps to wild habitats but colonizes artificial breeding grounds as well.
