Amy, pelo que entendi se trata de fazer marcas em baixo relevo (carvings) ao "(removing some chips by applying pressure or making inserts)". Seria diferente de uma marca a ferro, por exemplo, que fica em alto relevo. A primeira imagem que me veio à mente ao ler a frase foi uma criança deixando seu nome marcado no tronco de uma árvore (wood carving).
