Japanese term or phrase:
I'm sorry I don't have more details about this term except that it appeared in a automobile check list for parts failure. I'm not sure what's the meaning of ガタ小品. Please help. Thanks.

comparison test on small backlash type
Explanation:
I think ガタ means a play or a backlash, i.e a clearance between mechanical parts.

Comparitive test of items with minor rattling / looseness

Explanation:
This is just a guess. I found a similar term in a patent description. It seems to classify スライド部のがたつきが小さいプロペラシャフト as a type of ガタ小品.

There is an entry for がたつき on proz, which may be useful. (Please see web references below).

Good luck!

I checked the 広辞苑 and found "がた" as having an almost broken aspect, and "がたつく" as something that makes wrattling sound.

neutral  dosanko: I would say that がた means "loose" rather than "broken". For example: http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=がた&dtype=0&dname=...

comparison test of small parts with looseness/play

Explanation:
ガタ could be "looseness" or in the U.S. we often use "play" to describe automotive parts that are loose or rattle. Good luck
