Primär geht es um Installation und Konfiguration.

"Silent software installation" ist die Überschrift einer "Lesson", in der es um die Installation von Drittanbieter-Software geht:

In this lesson, you load software from other vendors that will support the operation of the Contact Server. This software includes the TimesTen database system, the WebSphere web server, and the DB2 database system. The Enterprise Contact Server 6.2.1 Installer performs the actual installation of the software that you load onto your server.

Leider wird die "silent software installation" im nachfolgenden Text (verschiedene "Activities" zur Installation von Drittanbieter-Software) nicht mehr aufgegriffen.

Daher meine Frage: Bedeutet "silent software installation" immer "Installation im Hintergrund", oder kann damit auch etwas anderes (etwa: Installation von Drittanbieter-Software) gemeint sein?

Die Tatsache, dass der "Installer" die eigentliche Installation durchführt, deutet darauf hin, dass "Installation im Hintergrund" stimmen könnte, aber ein Feedback von erfahrenen SW-ÜbersetzerInnen würde mich sehr beruhigen :-)

Explanation:
"Installation im Hintergrund" würde ich nicht als falsch betrachten, aber als ungenauer. Z. B. für die Windows-Updates muss ich (bei meiner Standardeinstellung) erst mal die Installation bestätigen, bevor der Rest davon im Hintergrund abläuft.

Explanation:
Ich möchte den bisherigen Antworten nicht widersprechen, kann gut sein, dass die Kollegen recht haben. Ich weise allerdings darauf hin, dass man diesen Begriff nicht nur - wie wir Deutsche das gerne machen - als "silent (software installation)" auflösen kann, sondern auch nach einer speziell angelsächsischen Unart als "(silent software) installation", also "installation of silent software" - Installation von Software, die nach der Installation ihren Dienst unbemerkt im Hintergrund verrichtet. In dem speziellen Kontext (Download von Drittsoftware, Datenbank-Engines) erscheint mir das nicht ganz unplausibel. Insbesondere als Überschrift.

Das lässt sich ja leicht testen - wenn Du Dir das gesamte Kapitel durchliest, sollte doch klar werden, ob die Installation im Hintergrund ohne Benutzereingaben abläuft. Falls nicht, brauchst Du eine Lösung in Richtung meines Vorschlags; falls ja, könnten die Kollegen Recht haben.

Asker: Vielen Dank für deinen Input. Leider steht mir hier nicht ausreichend Kontext zur Verfügung. Bei den nachstehenden "Activities" geht's lediglich um "steps to provide information to the Aspect Enterprise Contact Server Installer so that it will successfully install the third party software", dann ist das Kapitel zu Ende. Ich hatte aber ohnehin vor, den Kunden zu fragen, was er mit "silent" meint.
