Uniformitatea spaţială a câmpurilor magnetice cu frecvenţe din domeniul radio transmise pacientului şi recepţionate este testată cu ajutorul unui dispozitiv numit fantom. Câmpul magnetic transmis este acel câmp magnetic utilizat pentru rotirea magnetizării. Câmpul magnetic recepţionat depinde de sensibilitatea bobinei de a răspunde la semnalul produs de precesia spinilor. Ambele câmpuri magnetice trebuie să fie omogene: primul, pentru a asigura o rotaţie uniformă a spinilor, iar cel de-al doilea, pentru a produce o sensibilitate spaţială uniformă în zona investigată.
