Ainda testando aparelho purificador de água--contexto:
"para a aprovação do aparelho em casa ensaio específico, devem ser selectionadas três amostras: prova, contra-prova e testemunha"
I can easily see 'testemunha' = 'control', but would appreciate knowing if there is a specific lab term for 'prova' and its 'counter-xx', espec. since I am using 'ensaio' throughout for 'test' and 'prova' also can mean 'test'.

first sample--counter-sample
Explanation:
I think the problem lies in the duplication of the wording and author's avoidance in using 'amostra: amostra' twice.

But the 'prova' in this instance is the 'sample'.

So, I would say something like:

"...three samples must be selected: the first sample, the counters-sample and the control sample".

Hope it helps :)

Thanks, Richard. My No. 1 lab proofreader suggests 'test' could well be used for 'first', but we've clearly put the nail in the counter... ;-)
