لا أعتقد أن ترجمتها حرفيا "فتات الخبز" ستكون دقيقة إذ إن تلك القصة ليست من الثقافة العربية وليست منتشرة بين العرب إلى حد كبير وعليه فإن المتلقي العربي العادي لن يستطيع تحديد الصلة بين "فتات الخبز" وبين ما هو مقصود هنا. أنا أقترح استخدام "مسار تتبعي" فهو والله أعلم ما يُقصد من وراء المجاز في هذا السياق

My point of view that we can not use اقتفاء or اقتفاء الاثر
both terms indicate that we trace a track thats already been moved (usually we shall trace from the start point and discover other points one after another to reach the final point).

التقهقر means "we shall trace from the final point and discover other points one after another to reach the final point"

صحيح ان التقهقر بقافيها وهائها أعسر لفظاً من الاقتفاء والأثر ولكنها الأكثر قرباً في المعنى
لكي أن تسبدلي التصفح بأي كلمة أخرى مناسبة ففي رأيي الإبقاء على لفظة التقهقر هو الأهم
