SCENE 10: OXFORD GROUP MEETING IN A HOME IN AKRON

BOB, ANNE, HENRIETTA and T. HENRY WILLIAMS (moustache, glasses, etc.) are sitting in a semicircle, finishing singing “Amazing Grace.” (BOB not singing) The rest of the group—ten others—are unseen.

Henrietta: I feel such gratitude to T. Henry and Clarace for opening your beautiful home to us for these meetings. Do you wish to give testimony now, T. Henry?

T. Henry: Thank you, Henrietta. Ahem. Now I’d have to say my main shortcomin’ today is the way, despite all my willpower and my prayer, I can’t seem to stay away from that gol-darned self-centerednesss. ***(a cough)***. And tune in to my direct access to that Power which is the Living God. Ahem. Now, I’d have to say that absolute honesty and absolute purity ain’t too tough for me. ***(a sniff)*** But that there absolute love’s a real twister! Clarace and I sit every mornin’ in silence for a half hour, seekin’ guidance. Every so often there’s a small victory, at home with the little whippersnappers. Or in the tire factory. Ahem. That’s it. (he smiles) I’m maximum. (Bob grimaces) Thank you. Henrietta?

Henrietta: Thank you T.Henry. I’m sure we can all identify with what you said.

(Henrietta looks at Anne, then both—and T.Henry—look at Bob, who is startled. Bob feels the pressure. Pause.)
