chayote squash

Explanation:
This is the way it is labeled in grocery stores in California.

It is pale green in color and has a tough outer skin and inner seed that need to be removed after simmering. Then it adds a delicious flavor, texture and color to sopa de albondigas or sopa de fideos, for example.

The plant also makes a nice seasonal shade cover for an arbor, as it grows quickly. If you plant a few, they are as prolific as zucchini and you will have all you can cook and freeze and still be importuning your neighbors to take some off your hands.

-> Ah, si. Entre traducciones deberiamos estar escribiendo libros de cocina.

agree  Herman Vilella: I like this term a lot. More explicit. Did you ever use hollowed-out boiled chayote gourd as a pan for oven-cooking vanilla custard? Meringue on top? Yummy
9 hrs
-> No, but I will try it! I have made chayotes rellenos, though, filling the shells with picadillo or other relleno as one would with eggplant or zucchini. Thanks, Herman.
