I think your translation could be read as - "you are not wanted in this workhouse" whereas I think the author is trying to say ""do something to get out of this poverty" - hence my variant!

Explanation:
богадельня is just a figure of speach for getting out of that bloody place (probably a country...). Unless they are in a real flophouse/workhouse, which I doubt, it would be a mistake to translate it literally: you should use a figure of speech pertinent to English.
