I'm getting myself in a bit of a pickle here.

First of all I need to check that the business is indeed Joint Venture, because there's nothing in the rest of the document to indicate that there are state funds involved... Or can "empresa mixta" mean something else?

The next thing is the word order - just can't seem to come up with anything that doesn't sound awkward.

Very grateful for any help. It's a Spanish document for a European context (ie British or EU English!).

Thank you very much John. As you see, I've had to go for Mixed Company, given the info from the client. My ancient Alcaraz & Hughes (2ª Ed revisada 1994) gives this.

Me ha hecho llegar esta explicación el cliente: "Las empresas mixtas se asemejan a una Joint Venture en Derecho Internacional, siendo estructuras societarias mediante las que sus socios crean una nueva entidad o asociación en la que se comparte la inversión, los gastos operativos, las responsabilidades de gestión, así como los beneficios y las pérdidas de forma proporcional a la participación y con responsabilidad limitada."
Lo cual indica que solamente nos podría valer la explicación de John, a no ser que queráis añadir algo más....

In this case there is definitely no state involvement, and the term is used because there is foreign participation.

In this case we are talking about a proposal for a business in which the shareholders are a Spanish company and a number of companies from another specific EU country. Didn't manage to track down the client this morning - will try again tomorrow - but rereading all of the documentation I have provides no suggestions of state participation, unless I'm not recognising that one of the shareholding companies from that other country is actually a state-owned company.

lI've always seen "joint venture" translated as "empresa conjunta", but see "empresa mixta" is some online dictionaries. And, especially as the questioner says there is no mention of 'state funds', I'll accept "joint venture" as an alternative.

I think we may need more context.
