an essential transit point Explanation: "choke point" and "bottleneck" also came to mind but they both have overtones which are inappropriate here. I agree with Sharon's BMR and would suggest something along the lines of: "In the timeframe to 2018, the Brussels Metropolitan Region has set the goal of developing into an essential transit point for Europe, in terms of both culture and economy." |

a must-see location or destination Explanation: It will of course depend on what BMR we're talking about, but I think that you could go with a must-see location (destination or stop, depending on the tone of the text) - a place you just can't miss. I'm not sure why you've referred to GDP in your comment, however. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day23 hrs (2009-10-27 07:34:27 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I don't know why, but this question popped back into my head as I was going to sleep last night (!) and "hub" was what came to mind. OED defines hub as: "2. the centre of an activity or region" |
