Again, I need someone's help to understand that bit of the sentence because it seems to make no sense at all... I'd really appreciate an explanation of the meaning. Thank you guys.

It is undeniable that the film gave Brazilian cinema a tremendous boost ?????????

Asker: I must say I didn't think of the possibility of the author not knowing the meaning of detrimento, but with this text... it might be worth considering this possibility. Thanks :-)

Asker: Er..., I know the expression "to the detriment of", the problem is that it doesn't seem to make sense here. "The film was great for BR cinema to the detriment of what? The film itself? Do you see what I mean?

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
agree  Donna Sandin: the key is what does ALAVANQUE mean here - it seems to be some sort of movement, excessive hype, public outcry maybe, which acted to the detriment of the film. (I don't know what the alavanque was). Knowing that, then to the detriment of is perfect
