Telescoping (prolapse) of a portion of the intestine within another immediately adjacent portion of intestine. This decreases the supply of blood to the affected part of the intestine, and frequently leads to intestinal obstruction. The pressure created by the two walls of the intestine pressing together causes inflammation, swelling, and reduces the blood flow.

"Tarminvaginasjon er en tilstand som skyldes at en del av tarmen vrenges inn i tarmavsnittet ovenfor eller nedenfor, og at tarmen dermed prøver å "fordøye" seg selv. Tarmens normale bevegelser vil prøve å skyve dens innhold nedover, noe som igjen fører til at mer og mer av tarmen som er "invaginert", vil vrenges inn i neste tarmsegment. Oftest er det siste del av tynntarmen som vrenges inn i første del av tykktarmen."
