about a mother hoping to retain custody of her son.

I've seen ضَنْو and ضِنْو in Hans Wehr, meaning "children" so perhaps this means "child"? If so, does it have any connotations, e.g. "darling child?". Also if you could say what the vowels are, this would be a great help. I'm guessing ضَنَا .

Thank you!

her own "flesh and blood"
Explanation:
The key element here is the use of the quotation marks. This tells you that this word was chosen specifically to expresses a sentiment that is relevant to the amendment discussed in the report and that a balnd word, like "child" or even "offspring" does not begin to express. Therefore, you need an expression that clearly brings out that sentiment. The connotation here is more important than the denotation.
