Explanation:
Я всегда думала, что это про наркотики, однако после просмотра нескольких форумов выясняется, что эта строчка имеет отношение к сайентологии, т.к. Леонард Коэн одно время ей увлекался и сам признал это в одном из интервью.

Вот что пишут про значение "clear" в этой религии: ""Clear: the name of a state achieved through auditing or an indiviual who has achieved this state. A Clear is a being who no longer has his own reactive mind. A Clear is an unaberrated person and is rational in that he forms the best possible solutions he can on the data he has and from his viewpoint. The Clear has no engrams which can be restimulated to throw out the correctness of computation by entering hidden and false data."

Some of the articles about you over the years have indicated that you've dabbled or more than dabbled in various kinds of spiritual paths. Is the line, "Did you ever go clear?" from Famous Blue Raincoat a Scientology reference?

Cohen
It was a Scientology reference. I looked into a lot of things. Scientology was one of them. It did not last very long.

Explanation:
диалог на форуме:
Alguien me podria aclarar en sentido de estas 2 frases:
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?
Es de la canción Famous Blue Raincoat de Leonard Cohen

Sometimes only the artist knows what he is referring to and that seems to be the case here. I would guess that maybe this person was on drugs or maybe drank a lot and the singer is asking him if he has stopped using drugs or alcohol. But that is just a guess.

For the rest of the song I guess that meaning about giving up drugs or similar would fit.

Explanation:
My opinion is that L. Cohen was speaking about drug detox. The original worlds sounded like that :

Did you ever "stop using"... and he eventually changed them (visibly for the rhyme) into Did you ever "go clear".
