treffend zu lokalisieren. Beispiel: Ölunfall im Golf von Mexiko. Dort wird in den Pressemitteilungen die aufgesaugte Menge Öls in Gallon angegeben. "Europäisiert" man das in Liter, Hektoliter, Tonnen? Manche bringen "Barrel" ins Spiel, bei einem Öl-Wasser-Gemisch, dessen Ölgehalt vermutlich unter 50% liegt? Und dann den obligaten, gebetsmühlenhaft vorgetragenen Hinweis in Klammern: ein Barrel entspricht 159 Liter?

hat sich mein Auftraggeber beschwert, dass ich die "mileage" von Autos in einem amerikanischen Text (die in "miles / gallon", mpg, angegeben wird) umgerechnet und in Liter / 100 km angegeben habe! Unter miles per gallon kann sich hierzulande niemand etwas vorstellen, aber "wer zahlt, schafft an" - also hab ich die Übersetzung wieder rückübersetzt und nur eine Fußnote gemacht... :-(

... they made a fuss because "he was 3 1/2 feet tall" was translated 105 cm instead of 106 cm (I don't remember the exact figure; I think 1 m would have been a better translation), as if it mattered in this context. If that wasn't enough, they insisted upon having 3 1/2 in brackets despite the piece was being translated in various European languages, as if the reader could care.
Anyway, as long as THEY are happy, I am happy:)

In case someone wonders why I didn't know the answer, I must point out someone else has done the work and I was checking the correctness of numbers, layout, etc. Alas I could not get in touch with him to correct the "mistake", hence the question (my German is next to nil).

I wish I could, but unfortunately both sets of measurements must be included (don't ask me why... I have had many an argument about it I doubt anybody understands feet in Germany:) and as I said, I always do as I am told :):)

Hi Andrea, there is no point mentioning the feet. Just keep the 443 Meter.
