Russian term or phrase: В идейном хаосе исследовательских подходов
В идейном хаосе исследовательских подходов, обусловленном хаосом в стране, ищущей новые формы, с одной стороны, преобладает тенденция представлять Российскую Федерацию в свете старых интерпретативных схем советологического образца.

English translation:the conceptual chaos of different research approaches
Explanation:
I think that with horribly written sentences (even "с одной стороны" без "другой"), you have to seize the sentence as a whole and attempt to beat it into shape.

"Within the conceptual chaos of different research approaches, stemming from the general chaos as the country sought a new form, there [sometimes] seemed to predominate a tendency to look at the RF under the light of the old, Sovietological interpretive schemes."

Where [sometimes] is optional, for the orphaned "с одной стороны". And, I suppose, "a new form" should be "new forms," except the singular sounds much better in English.

In the ideological chaos regarding the approaches to research

Explanation:
in general I agree with Susan, except that I have rephrased it slightly, and I have used 'ideological' instead of 'intellectual' because I am using the meaning of the word that appears to more closely match the overall point of the statement.

agree  Olga B: ... of research approaches?// I like the idea of singular:)

  -> Спасибо Ольга! 'of research approaches' would be fully understood, but 'the approaches to research' has a more native flow, for me. Even in the singular, "approach" would work quite well. // actually, i like it also.

agree  Eric Candle: "новые формы" (here) could be a "new strategy" or "new paradigm"
1 hr
  -> Thanks, Eric. That might be a good idea - "paradigm." But, it's not what Maria asked about here.

agree  Vladimir Dubisskiy: yes, i thought "conceptual" myself// may be 'of varied approaches'

  -> Thanks, Vladimir.
