English to German translations [PRO] Philosophy
English term or phrase:This too shall pass
This is in the context of a young adult still dealing with her mother's death which occurred years before. She gets a tattoo that says "this too shall pass"; I don't want to just say "Das wird auch vorbeigehen" since I'm sure the equivalent phrase in german isn't such a literal translation. Suggestions? (sorry about the "philosophy" category, I really wasnt' sure which category this would fit into. Thanks!)
Vielleicht sollte wir uns auf einen Songtitel einigen, da eine 14-jährige Deutsche auch so etwas "zitieren" würde. Abgesehen davon, dass sich eine coole 14-jährige womöglich sowieso einen englischen Titel tattooieren ließe, hätte ich ein paar Vorschläge aus den Top-100: "Dann geh doch" "Ohne Dich" "So allein" "Ich glaub es geht schon" "Niemals geht man ganz"
also, ich würde mir kein tattoo stechen lassen ,aber das ist eine Generations- und Geschmackssache. Ich kenne ein paar Leute mit großflächigen Tätowierungen , die modernen Lasermethoden funktionieren bei manchen zur Entfernung ganz gut, und sonst halt lassen, dann gibt es auch keine Narbe.
wenn einer mit einem Button stairway to heaven rumläuft, dann wäre vielleicht evidenter, dass hier keine Himmelsleiter zitiert wird, sondern dass jemand sein Lebensgefühl in einem Songtitet ausdrückt. Ich kenne nun den von mir als Link eingestellten Song nicht, vielleicht aber jede 14-Jährige. Deshalb habe ich mal drauf hingewiesen, das zu prüfen (mein Vater würde Stairway to Heaven auch nicht erkennen) Und was deine wortnahe (um das auch mal für meinen Küchengebrauch umzudrehen und handlicher zu machen) Übersetzung angeht, so kommt das irgendwie weder jugendsprachlich noch philosophisch/mystisch etc. sonderlich gut, sondern klingt halt wie Omas Sprüchlein beim Blick auf ein aufgeschürftes Knie. Aber das ist MEINE ganz persönliche Ansicht, die natürlich gerne abgelehnt werden kann.
die Idee für gerade DAS tattoo hatte, ist powidl. Wenn sie ungefähr wußte, was es bedeutet, hieße das, küchenpsychologisch, daß sie resilienz zeigt. DASS sie ungefähr weiß, worum es geht, ist bei IHR im englischsprachigen Raum wahrscheinlicher, als hier. DARUM ist eine nahe-wörtliche Übersetzung, wie meine, samt einer kurzen Erklärung, eben die bessere Lösung, als ein Wettbewerb im Werbetexten. Aber gut, bei mir in der Küche ist alles einfacher. Wiki, I ask you?!

Explanation: This too shall pass has a long history, dating back to ancient Persia, ancient Hebrew texts, and ancient Turkish stories. It means- in the material world, nothing is fixed, nothing is secure, nothing should be taken for granted, not happiness, not tragedy, sadness, riches ,poverty-THIS TOO SHALL PASS. In the beginning of the 19th century, this phrase was quite popular in English literature. In german, I have not found a real term, that would transport the same meaning, as the litterally feeble few words in English do, if you know the meaning. It is a bit similar to the Greek (latin transcript, as I do not know Greek) panta rei -everything flows, and the Latin sic transit gloria mundi, although both latter phrases differ greatly from the phrase in question in their deeper meanings.
