Explanation:
dalla frase sembra un modo di dire locale. Non credo esista una traduzione ufficiale. Probabilmente è riferito agli spiazzi che si creano lungo il corso del fiume.
Metterei l'inglese, con una traduzione, più o meno letterale, tra parentesi.

A quanto sembra, gli hams sono i famosi Lammas meadows: prati comuni che, in occasione della festa di Lammas (1 agosto, festa pagana), non potevano essere usati come pascolo. Hanno caratteristiche specifiche, che ritrovi nei link di riferimento.
"The hams are still attractive, bordered by wooded hills and bisected by rows of magnificent willow trees"
Nel link di Googlebooks (dove trovi un testo in cui si proprio di questi campi aperti) trovi proprio l'espressione "prati del primo agosto". La mia proposta è di tradurli così, mettendo la dicitura inglese tra parentesi.
