I've found "supposition of a crime" in the Kudos, but it doesn't convince me.
Here's the sentence:

L'ipotesi di reato prospettata nell'avviso di conclusione delle indagini preliminari risulta infondata per più motivi, che emergono con evidenza non appena si ricostruiscano correttamente le operazioni poste a fondamento delle contestazioni mosse all'odierno esponente, prima sul piano fiscale e successivamente in ambito penale.

It simply means offence. I think Italian lawyers like including ipotesi because it is only alleged at this stage, and it only becomes an offence proper after it has been found to be such by a court.
