From a horse care manual:

En paard dat bij het losrijden niet rustig kan stappen, heeft te veel energie.
Begin het losrijden niet in galop of draf om energie te ontladen.
Tijdens het losrijden werk je in twee fasen.
Fase 1. Ritme en tempo: zorg dat je paard gemakkelijk van ritme en tempo kan wisselen.
Fase 2. Los in het lijf: zorg dat je paard zijn spieren goed gebruikt.
Deze fasen zijn de basis van het paardrijden. Hiermee leert het paard de ruiter ontspannen en in balans te dragen. Doorloop deze fasen bij iedere training in deze volgorde. Het gebeurt daarbij vaak genoeg dat je niet verder komt dan fase 1. Dat geeft niet, want fase 2 is gewoon erg lastig. Ga pas verder als het paard het aankan. Morgen is er weer een dag.
