French to English translations [PRO]
Social Sciences - Management / academic research methos
French term or phrase: collecte documentaire
Le recueil des données est fondé sur le triptyque observations – entretiens – collecte documentaire, classique d’une enquête ethnographique (Beaud et Weber, 2003)

My current translation is:
Data collection was carried out through the traditional, ethnographical three-fold approach of observation, interviews and document gathering (Beaud and Weber, 2003).

Any confirmed translations for "collecte documentaire" would be greatly appreciated.

document analysis
Explanation:
I don't think there's anything particularly "wrong" about "document gathering," but "document analysis" might have more currency in the anglophone literature.

Participant observation is an omnibus field strategy in that it "simultaneously combines document analysis, interviewing of respondents and informants, direct participation and observation, and introspection.

Analysis of documents and artifact are usually supplementary to participant observations and ethnographic interviews.

Multiple methods of data collection may be employed to facilitate a relationship that allows for a more personal and in-depth portrait of the informants and their community. These can include participant observation, field notes, interviews, and surveys. Interviews are often taped and later transcribed, allowing the interview to proceed unimpaired of note-taking, but with all information available later for full analysis. Secondary research and document analysis are also employed to provide insight into the research topic.

Not directly related to your question, and hard to say for sure without more context, but "est fondé sur" = "is based on" rather than "was carried out through"??

I was hesitating on using document analysis as I did not have the same quality of reference as you provided. Many thanks.

neutral  philgoddard: This may be the best we can come up with, but to me it suggests thumbing through pieces of paper whereas, as your very good references show, it also includes things like artefacts and recordings.

-> I suppose something similar could be said about "document gathering." The issue is with "documentaire" and whether one is justified translating it more broadly. Given the lack of context, I would keep "document." The EN term can refer to more than paper.

neutral  Daryo: wouldn't that be next step, after gathering all available documents?

-> The source text is talking about the different *methods* used in ethnographic investigation. "Document analysis" is one of those methods; I don't think I would say "document gathering" in itself is a method.

data research

Explanation:
'collecte' in French is often used as a substitute for research.
You can specify research in documents etc.. if you prefer.
Or leave research as is.

neutral  Sheri P: I like your answer and the refs. you provided. Just not sure about the two instances of "collection" being used together ("document collection" as part of "data collection").//IMO a less lit. tran. works better here and doesn't lose the essential meaning.

-> hello Sheri, I think data is collected via personal observations, interviews and other documents. // I understand your point, but "une collecte" can't be "une analyse"
