In this case I finally wrote 'Site Engineer', as it appreared several times, and from the details I had, it appeared that the function had been to supervise work on site in projects where ´Fagingeniør´ was used.

It is probably not ideal as a general translation, but fitted more or less in this context.

Here in North American we have the term Professional Engineer, which means that you not only have the engineering degree but also a certain number of years of related work experience (usually 5 years).

The only thing I can think of that I would write - not trying to tell you how to speak your own language - is specialist engineer (maybe "specialising" in the fire safety area you mention). If the person doesn't expand, maybe it just means that the CV could be better written..?

I googled it for half an hour but unfortunately without much success. My only suggestion is that maybe the person concerned is originally from Norway and had two years of Technisk Fagskole and started to work as a... engineering technician, perhaps?
