Arabic term or phrase: ع
Hi,

At the end of a letter it is signed and then says

ع / المدير العام

I'm guessing it is short for عن and means "on behalf of", but not sure.

Thank you for any help.

For/
Explanation:
Based on my vast experience in translating letters and contracts, i found that the preposition "For" is widely used in such cases.

Mr. Andrew said that this letter came at the end of the letter and after that came the signature.
ع / المدير العام

For sure, it is short for عن and means "on behalf of", and it is used to be shortened into "For/ followed by the Title" and then comes the signature

even the expression "عناية السيد" is translated into kind attention. It is usually shortened into "K/A"

Thank you everyone.

I very much like the pp answer too, but I believe the pp is usually handwritten by the signatory, whereas the ع here is printed. There is also the confusion that technically the pp should go in front of the person signing, not the signed-for person signed for - although many offices put it in front of the signed-for person.

Explanation:
may be it is short for عناية السيد that means "his esteem" if the context can bear this meaning.

disagree  Ahmed Ghaly (X): Dear Sir, with due regard, i would like to inform you that the word is not an abbreviation for "عناية السيد" rather, it is an abbreviation for "عن", which is an abbrev. itself for بالنيابة عن, it is used to be shortened to "for" instead of "acting for"

p.p. (per procurationem)

Explanation:
A common usage of per procurationem occurs in business letters, which are often signed on behalf of another person. For example, given a secretary authorized to sign a letter on behalf of the president of a company, the signature takes the form:

p.p. Secretary's Signature
President's Name

-> Thank you very much that is very nice of you :)

disagree  Ahmed Ghaly (X): I have translated an agreement today from English into Arabic ended by following phrase "for and on behalf of" then comes the signature. That is why I am sure that "For" is very common in such cases, but i have never encountered p.p. be4 during my career

-> Hi Ahmed, I am sorry but I am 100% sure of this one. I live and work in the UK. I had my own contract signed by the PA on behalf of the general manager. It was definitely p.p. not for
