Explanation:
Ein Schwarm ist eine Flugformation von vier bis sechs Kampfflugzeugen - http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwarm_(Luftfahrt)
A flight is a military unit in an air force, naval air service, or army air corps. It usually comprises three to six aircraft,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_(military_unit)
So a flight is a pretty much a Schwarm

This I suppose is about as close as you are going to get to a squadron

A squadron in air force, army aviation, or naval aviation is mainly a unit comprising a number of military aircraft and their flight crews, usually of the same type, typically with 12 to 24 aircraft, sometimes divided into three or four flights,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wing_(military_aviation_unit)

Die Fliegende Abteilung 101 besteht aus einer Stabs/Flugbetriebsstaffel und drei Hubschrauber-Staffeln, die sich wiederum in jeweils vier Schwärme untergliedern.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transporthubschrauberregiment_1...
So we are talking about a major unit and I am afraid that I have to disagree with the others - this is definitely not a squadron or a flight.

In most military aviation services, a wing is a relatively large formation of planes. In Commonwealth countries a wing usually comprises three squadrons, with several wings forming a group (around 10 squadrons). Each squadron will contain around 20 planes. In the United States Air Force, a wing is equivalent to a group.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_(air_force_unit)
So depends who you are writing for…. UK/Commonwealth = wing, US = group

A Fliegende Abteilung is made up of 3 Staffel so at least 30 aircraft + a staff/groundcrew unit. It is not a squadron - that can be made up of as few as 12 aircraft. 2 or more squadrons make up a wing.

Maybe it is not clear enough from the above - but here goes with a breakdown
Flight - Schwarm
Squadron - Flugzeugstaffel
Wing - Fliegende Abteilung

OK. Different structure.
'flight detachment' sounds ok

Not convinced by 'flying battalion' which has a narrative ring to it.

Asker: Thanks for the quick reply! I think the Fliegende Abteilung is a subdivision of the squadron. The sentence continues, but I don't know how to get into the field above to add this: …war als Hubschrauberführer in the Fliegenden Abteilung x des Kampfhubschrauberregiments x in … tätig. Ich denke: …was helicopter pilot in the "Fliegende Abteilung" of the combat helicopter squadron in...

Asker: Gliederung Bundeswehr Luftbewegliche Brigade 1 Kampfhubschrauberregiment 26 Fliegende Abteilung 261

disagree  Ronald van Riet: Squadron = Geschwader, this is a smaller organizational unit.

agree  Clive Phillips: "Bei den Heeresfliegern bilden zwei Staffeln eine Fliegende Abteilung in einem Regiment." In Army Aviation (Brit Army: AAC), two flights form a squadron within a wing. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staffel_(Militär)

flight

Explanation:
a flight is a subdivision of a squadron (= Geschwader) and this seems to fit better, but knowing wat the number of the fliegende Abteilung is, might help to find out exactly what is meant here.

flight

Explanation:
Pilot in an attack helicopter flight.

A flight is a unit of several aircraft, often attached (particularly in the case of helicopters) to an army unit. Several flights together form a squadron - a term generally used when the aircraft belong to an air force rather than an army battalion or brigade.
