This is from an advertising brochure on the Jura Mountains.
Here's the context: "NEIGE / ESPACES ET ACTIVITÉS NORDIQUES Plus vaste espace nordique en France, le Jura est le paradis des sports de glisse. Raquettes, ski de fond, luge, patinage… Il y en a pour tous les goûts, tous les âges, en famille ou entre amis. 2bis) NEIGE / **ESPRIT STATION** Fort de ses cinq domaines skiables, le Jura est une terre de prédilection pour une pratique familiale du ski de descente. et seul Mark en est responsable. Les francophones ont fait leur possible pour l'aider. Ce serait une très grande méprise de penser que c'est un slogan en français. Mais si le commanditaire souhaite un slogan, c'est à lui de le dire. Ce qui pourrait donner une idée à l'éditeur de la brochure et la rééditer en français.

As an English speaker, I stand by my suggestion which I would say is far preferable in the context to "state of mind" which is taken from a translated site. I agree with A Trans - too much hot air and little substance. And as I have said, a slogan is called for here.
Tout le problème est là. En soi, une station ou un domaine ne peut pas avoir un état d'esprit, dans le sens de "penser" mais il a un état d'esprit dans le sens de ce qu'il le réflète. Il projette une image qui sera recherchée et exploitée / préservée / développée / entretenue / maintenue etc. Ce qui fera leur attraction et leur réputation.

La discussion n'avait rien d'inutile ni de pontifiant ; elle aura aidé Mark à saisir le sens d'esprit dans le contexte. Un esprit qui peut être recherché par les touristes tout comme il peut être entretenu, maintenu par les habitants et les exploitants. Encore vague en français, donc vague en anglais pour qualifier l'esprit de la station ou du domaine. Lots of pontificating, but the asker is no nearer getting an answer. I alone suggested one, but that went down like a lead balloon. This discussion has led nowhere IMHO.
Cela concerne un domaine et qui a un certain état d'esprit mais qui pour le moment n'est pas encore défini en français. Donc aucune raison d'en faire plus en anglais. Le tout étant de savoir comment traduire au mieux "esprit".
And esprit proves it. They are trying to let people know what sort of ambiance/atmosphere/attitude/feeling etc etc they will discover or that the resort provides/creates
thanks... On top of that remember they are talking about more than one resort ("Au cœur de ses stations")... "esprit station" is for them... that's what I tried to suggest with "one of kind resorts"... @asker the thing is not about qualifying the "esprit" it's about translating "esprit station", not describing it! (like a translation of "plat du jour" is not going to tell you what you will be eating, but that it's the "dish of the day"...
It's not quite that clear cut or simple. It's marketing/copywriting and the difficulty isn't understanding the French (what it means is perfectly clear) but the trick is getting it into good marketing English. Knowing the resort and its esprit is helpful. Every resort has its own atmosphere/ambiance.

You are of course right, it is abundantly clear that this is to a large extent a copywriting job. However, I agree with Beila that knowing what the resort is like doesn't help much in this particular case, where it seems to me that what's needed is a phrase as deliberately vague as the original.

Et peu importe que la station soit dans les Alpes, les Alpes Maritimes, le Jura, les Pyrénées ou même les Dolomites (Cortina d'Ampezzo = esprit jet-set). Les stations pour de démarquer les unes des autres cultivent un esprit : familial, sportif, glisse, élégant (Megève), convivial, village, etc. L'esprit de la station fidélise aussi la clientèle ou la clientèle recherche ce type d'esprit. Il n'y a qu'à googler "esprit station" ou "esprit station + montagne" pour le comprendre ... Mais ce sera toujours "l'esprit de la station". En cherchant des stations mondialement connues, leur site doit être traduit en anglais et en comparant le français avec l'anglais, vous trouverez la réponse.
Skiing/winter sports in the French Jura region isn't the same as skiing in the Alps. Asker should look up the various resorts (there are far fewer than in the Alps) to see what they are like. This sort of text needs marketing/copywriting skills as much as simple translation. Like legal, tourism texts aren't the walk in the park many people seem to think they are. And if one doesn't know the actual areas/resorts etc. involved, it gets a bit more difficult.
@jennifer An explanation, or more than one, can help a native to figure out what the best translation could be... That's the reason behind my posts here. If I had to translate I would suggest something like 'one of a kind resort' bacause at the end of the day that is what "esprit station" reflects. It's not about anything specific it's about being pulling together in the same direction for the good of the resort, tourists, and people living there... and doing it in their own way.
@phil Not sure 'type of resort" is carrying the idea they want to advertise. What you are saying is not wrong but they want to put the emphasis on "it's the people who make this happen, it's how they are that makes these resorts special, it's their spirit"

Not really I think it has to do with "pratique familiale du ski" (relaxed skying for families = everybody can sky their way), "ses stations à taille humaine" (small resorts not packed with people), " paysages inattendus" (surprising scenery), "panel d’activités pour tout public" (all sorts of entertainment fot virtually anyone" That's what they call "esprit station"
I don't really understand the headings. Why are there two of them? Why does the second begin: "2 bis"? "Esprit station" sounds like it means "Type of resort" - in this case scenic, suitable for families.
