English term or phrase: disbanded
Hi,
I'm not sure about the meaning of "disbanded" in the text below. I've seen that "disband" usually means "To cease to function as an organization; break up." but I was wondering whether it is really possible that physical education has been completely eliminated in schools... Maybe it means "severely reduced"?
Thanks for your help!

In the school district where I live, the loss of school funds and the emphasis on pure academic achievement led to physical education being * disbanded * and recess time for kids being shortened

Explanation:
Completely eliminated. If the writer intended to say "severely reduced", then they chose the wrong vocabulary.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you for your help! I was so surprised that I thought it might be a mistake (which can happen sometimes...), but this seems to confirm that the author actually meant "eliminate" http://activelivingresearch.org/files/ALR_Brief_ActiveEducation_Summer2009.pdf In schools across the United States, physical education has been substantially reduced — and in some cases completely eliminated — in response to budget concerns and pressures to improve academic test scores Thanks to you and to Sheila for your precious help! Have a nice Sunday afternoon!

agree  Sheila Wilson: I think the writer really needed a different word, e.g. eliminated (unless the meaning is a bit different in AmEng)

cut out of the circulum

Explanation:
I would say that it has been "cut out of the curriculum." It hasn't been prohibited, only no provision is made for organized physical education activities in the schedule.

There are still physical education and sports activities, they are simply not formally in the curriculum any more.

That's supposed to be "curriculum" in the Answer (typo)
