English to German translations [PRO] Science - Journalism
English term or phrase:Luddite fear-mongering
Debunking popular myths about GM crops portrayed in the media
It is the failure of GM technology — not ***Luddite fear-mongering*** — that has prompted scientists, academics, policymakers, governments and regular people to question the biotech industry, writes Debbie Barker in an article for the Center for Food Safety. Barker especially debunks GMO myths promoted by Michael Specter in the New Yorker.
Wie würdet ihr "Luddite fear-mongering" übersetzen? Hier werden der Begriff und seine Herkunft erklärt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luddite More recently, the term Neo-Luddism has emerged to describe opposition to many forms of technology.
für die interessante Diskussion! Jetzt habe ich die Qual der Wahl zwischen lauter hervorragenden Vorschlägen! @Steffen: Willst deinen Vorschlag ("das Heraufbeschwören irrationaler Ängste") nicht auch noch unten reinstellen?
The term originated from one of Schiller's works and has also been used to describe former SED party members, etc. If you want to avoid possible connotations, why not start with "Sonderbehandlung"? The misappropriation of words by totalitarian regimes is nothing new.
Interesting point. Ultimately, the Duden doesn't seem to be of much help here.
Don't know why Gudrun and Andreas chose to include "Panikmache"? I think you cannot simply translate it by "stirring panic". At least in German, it's used in a broader context.
Just in my opinion, "Angstmacherei" as in "Angst machen" is a pretty weak statement - as we would say in German "das lockt keinen mehr hinterm Ofen hervor". "Angst schüren" may be a good compromise, but then you have the problem of noun+verb, which would force you to restructure the sentence. "Ewiggestrige" could be a good match for "Luddite" then:
Dass Wissenschaftler, ... nun die Motive der Biotech-Industrie hinterfragen, ist ganz allein dem Versagen der Gentechnik anzulasten, nicht irgendwelchen Versuchen Ewiggestriger, die Angst um die Einführung neuer Technologien zu schüren, schreibt...
Oh, and before someone complains: No word-for-word translation - but that was intended.
Panic is quite a few steps further up the ladder from fear. Instilling fear may cause people to think and worry more about the subject (and possibly act), but panic is, by definition, uncontrolled. (a sudden overwhelming fear, with or without cause, that produces hysterical or irrational behavior)
Mongering is dealing in, selling or promoting. Promoting panic would very probably be unlawful = insurrection (a violent uprising against an authority or government).
I doubt very much that the "scientists, academics, policymakers, governments and regular people" have been provoked to act hysterically or irrationally in questioning bio tech industry - although, perhaps, they should :-)
"The title Luddite developed a secondary meaning: a "Luddite" is a term describing those opposed to, or slow to adopt or incorporate into their lifestyle, industrialisation, automation, computerisation or new technologies in general."
Explanation: Resisting progress during the industrial revolution, the Luddites smashed the new weaving looms and spinning machines that were taking the livelihoods of hand weavers ans spinners.

...and spinners (of course)
