English term or phrase: would have been dumped into the pool (of lunatics)
In the late 1800s, when Kraepelin was doing his pioneering work, encephalitis lethargica was not a known disease. Anybody suffering from it would have been dumped into the pool of lunatics housed in asylums.

Explanation:
...rinchiusi nei manicomi

Una proposta

Secondo me sarebbe un peccato perdere l'immagine creata da quel "dumped into" dell'originale

Explanation:
"dumped into the pool of lunatics" mi sembra piuttosto forte come espressione, poco "rispettosa", da dove le proposte alternative "pazzo/demente" e anche "messo sotto chiave"
