uneven firing/overfiring Explanation: The uneven firing also created different quality brick, some of which was not suitable to be exposed to the elements. The softer brick known as salmon or sammel brick was often used on the inside of walls. Over-fired bricks, known as clinkers, often ended up being used as pavement. Unlike the other buildings which display uniformly shaped bricks on their exteriors, these homes were built using clinker bricks. Clinker bricks were the result of over-firing during the brick manufacturing process. Excessive temperatures caused the bricks to melt and become distorted in shape. Considered rejects, they were discarded by the Clayburn Company.
