La búsqueda era todo junto. Era descubrir una cosa maravillosa, una posibilidad nueva, totalmente nueva. Trabajábamos en chapas de metal y con rodillos y tintas de imprentas, que tienen unos colores muy luminosos, incluso muchas transparencias.

El estarcido, también llamado esténcil ... es una técnica artística de decoración en que una plantilla con un dibujo recortado es usada para aplicar pintura, lanzándola a través de dicho recorte, obteniéndose un dibujo con esa forma.

"Chapa" has many different meanings, and I think this is what the artist is referring to in this case.

Charles may be right too; perhaps they mean that they worked (painted or whatever) on metal, that they used it as a support (instead of paper or canvas)... The wider context should tell which of the suggestions so far is the right one.
