Abstract: This paper is a study of the strain rate effect on the mechanical behaviour of steel wires during drawing. www.mater.upm.es/fgalvez/PDF/Gef2002-Tref.pdf Discussion of Wire Draw Effect in HydroProducts Steam Saver Trap A major concern of all engineers and facilities managers utilizing a venturi steam trap is the effect of wire draw on the performance of the trap. In 1994 I installed Steam Saver traps from HydroProducts on four sets of drying cans on Dye Range #4.The objective of the installation was to determine the performance of the Steam Saver traps compared with Armstrong bucket traps that were traditionally used. After 5 years of operation, several of the Steam Saver units were removed during a PM cycle and inspected. There was no change in the internal throat diameter of the traps, even after five years of continuous service. For a Steam Saver trap, this can only occur as the actual condensate load through the nozzle falls to a small percentage of the design capacity of the trap. On most applications involving Steam Saver traps, the condensate flow rate never falls below 25% of the trap’s maximum capacity. The condensate velocity through the nozzle remains low and there is no significant wire draw effect on the nozzle. The above dry can application, however, did allow the condensate load to fall to less than 10% of capacity. This occurred for significant periods of time between product runs, and probably approached 40% of the total range operational time. It would be expected that, if wire draw would occur at these same pressures, it would show up in this application. The absence of any change in the wire diameter over the last seven years seems to indicate that for saturated steam at pressures seen in most industrial environments, the ten-year guarantee given by HydroProducts is well founded and probably very conservative, even for less than ideal operating circumstances. http://www.hydroproductscompany.com/pdf/discussion-of-wire-d...
