Position the microphone for the best pickup of direct
sound. Depending on its placement, the talker’s microphone
may be picking up considerable reverberation, only to amplify
it through the sound system, thus contributing to the level of
the reverberant ﬁeld. Use a cardioid microphone with a pickup
pattern that rejects most of the unwanted oﬀ-axis sound.
Moving the microphone closer to the talker helps to improve
the ratio of direct to reverberant sound being picked up.
