Dutch term or phrase: Sas
Hi all,

I've come across the term "sas" in various combinations. I'm pretty sure I know what "sas" refers to (a pyrotechnic composition, gun powder), but am not very sure about the following uses:

lichtsas, rooksas, brandsas, knalsas, traansas, aanvuursas, vertraagsas, slagsas.

Could it be as simple as light powder, smoke powder, tear powder....?

There is no more context other than related images, which do not provide further clarification.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. :-)

sas
composition

Explanation:
"Sas" is a calque taken from the German word "Satz", literally meaning "sediment", but equates to our Gallicism "composition".
This is confirmed in the WNT (Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal), the HOEFFER's French-Dutch Military Technical Dictionary dd. 1881, and the WILCOX French-English Military Technical Dictionary dd. 1947

You may need to adapt it in certain instances to fit PyroTec terminology.
For that, see the definitions I have excerpted from the WNT, Hoeffer, and Wilcox below.

======
WNT: http://gtb.inl.nl/
======

SAS
znw. vr.

(”Voor de mortieren waren ruim 800 brandkogels en voor de handmortieren 600 lichtkogels voorhanden”, KUYPERS, Ned. Artill. 3, 46; ”Een lichtkogel vliegt door de lucht en valt op de plaats waar het gedruisch is vernomen”, V. REES, T. Poland 2, 180 [1867]);
vandaar: Lichtkogelsas, en: handlichtkogel (Dl. V, 1859)

BRANDSAS
Sas die een groote vlam geeft;

1°. het ontsteken van zeer brandbare ladingen enz. …;
105 [1865]. Voor de … slag- of wrijvingsassen worden stoffen gevorderd, die bij een betrekkelijk geringen warmtegraad reeds ontbinden, 110.

WRIJVINGSAS
Sas die door wrijving ontbrandt.

Base on the WNT definitions above, and cross references in Hoeffer, Wilcox, etc. I would deduce the following equivalents:

LICHTSAS: illuminating composition
— used for flares, signal bombs, & battlefield illumination;

ROOKSAS: smoke composition
— designed primarily to generate smoke (obscurants e.g. smoke bombs, smoke screens, smoke grenades);

BRANDSAS: incendiary composition
— French: composition incendiaire (see Hoeffer, pg. 128, Wilcox pg. 94);
— Colque derived from German: Brandsatz;
— aka incendiary agent, incendiary material (acc. to http://dict.cc);
— aka incendiary, incendiary device (acc. to TUChemnitz, http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de)

KNALSAS: primer; primer composition; priming composition;
— French: composition d'amorce (see Hoeffer, pg. 128, Wilcox pg. 94);

TRAANSAS: lacrimator (mil. spelling); lachrymatory agent
— used for tear bombs and projectiles deploying CN gas.

AANVUURSAS: initiator composition
— used spur on the subsequent ignition of other materials

VERTRAAGSAS: delay composition (aka delay train, delay charge)
— used to introduce a delay in the firing train

SLAGSAS: impact-sensitive composition
— (cf. wrijvingsas: friction-sensitive composition); shock-sensitive compound.

With the exception of knalsas and traansas, the term they all seem to have in common is "composition".

Reference information:
I think you could use XXX composition - or more fully XXX pyrotechnic composition - for each of these types of 'sas'. For instance, 'primer composition' / 'first fire composition' (aanvuursas), 'delay composition' (vertraagsas), 'smoke (generating/producing) composition' (rooksas), 'light (generating/producing) composition' / 'illuminant composition' (lichtsas), etc.

See for instance http://tinyurl.com/j7gxkn6 and http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/817071.pdf

The term "explosive" thus includes all solid and liquid materials variously known as high explosives and propellants, together with igniter, primer, initiatory and pyrotechnic (e.g., illuminant, smoke, delay, decoy, flare, and incendiary) compositions.
Pyrotechnic compositions are substances (or a mixture of substances) that when ignited, undergo an energetic chemical reaction at a controlled rate intended to produce on demand and in various combinations, specific time delays or quantities of heat, noise, smoke, light or infrared (IR) radiation. Pyrotechnic compositions may be used to initiate burning reactions such as in igniters.
