Russian term or phrase: дифферон
This Russian term means "cellular organization with programmed differentiation."

This term comes up on a regular basis in the articles that I am translating. I am trying to avoid using this long and descriptive string of words repetitively.

The English transliteration "differon" yields a couple of Russian articles in Google search. If I use "differon" in my translation, my audience will not understand me. Obviously, I can attempt to introduce the term into the English biological jargon. But this would be my last resort.

I can also take "cellular organization with programmed differentiation" and abbreviate it, referring to it as COPD in the rest of the articles. But my medically-educated audience may be uncomfortable reading it since chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the first thing that comes to mind.

The articles talk about a crypt-villus unit in the mammalian small intestine. Stem cells constantly undergo fission to produce differentiated enterocytes: absorptive cells, endocrine cells, goblet cells, and Paneth cells. These cells function in the intestine, exfoliate, get absorbed by the gut, while the stem cells in the niche of the crypt continue producing more cells. This type of cellular organization is called "differon" in "Russian." "Differon" is not restricted to the intestinal crypt-villus unit. Hematopoietic system, for example, is also a "differon."

Does anyone know a term in English that describes such cellular unit?

Thank you.

cell lineage

Клеточный дифферон или гистогенетический ряд — это совокупность клеток данного типа (данной популяции), находящихся на разных этапах дифференцировки.

A cell lineage is the developmental history of a differentiated cell as traced back to the cell from which it arises.

“differentiation pathway” works better in the context to me, because it feels closer to “differon” as defined above and emphasizes cell differentiation.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Google search of "cellular differon" brings up Russian articles translated into English. The term is transliterated into English in these articles. I am looking for an English term and not a transliteration from Russian.

Possibly you would want to research such options, and hopefully to you as a native speaker, that would sound a bit more clear.

Here is definition of

As
the elements of the same differon (set of cellular forms

lineage) develop and differentiate, they appear
in different layers of the skin. Currently, the main
targets of researchers’ interest are epithelial and fibroblast
differons of the skin. The elements of the first

and components of the second differon are in
the dermis and subcutaneous fat. In accordance with
the tissue topography several skin SC niches could be

SC niche, dermal and adipose niches [35].

As far as I see lineage seems to be closer term to differon, which is actually sum of all those cells in different stages within the lineage
