Hi everyone,

I'm translating a piece for a company that makes to-die-for bespoke tailored men's shirts (I have seen photos, believe me!).The sentence in question is this:

Siamo senza dubbi tra i leader del mercato, anche soltanto focalizzandosi, per fare un esempio, sulle classiche righe o bacchette, sui quadri di ogni misura e contrasto, sulla tipologia e mano tessile che spazia dai popeline raffinati, ai cotoni più spessi e sportivi, fino al jersey.

mine so far, but bacchetta-less:
We are undoubtedly a market leader, even if you consider just, by way of example, classic stripes or bacchette, checks of any size and contrast, textile type and handle, from refined poplins to the thickest, sportiest of cottons, through to jersey.


Having searched high and low I have found a photo (yay) but no corresponding English text (boo) or corresponding photo on English language site (double boo).

This http://www.ilcamiciaio.it/camicie/ is a "bacchette" design on a men's shirt - sort of stripes but made up of tiny individual blocks.

So, if any of you out there are not only translators or similar but also tailors or just au fait with men's shirts or fine fabrics - what on earth do you call this??

Thanks in advance - even a pointer in the dark would be much appreciated!

Given the width of the stripe and the fact they are solid colour on white background these could be candy stripes. Also because a candy cane (from which they get their name) sounds linguistically close to bacchetta ( stick).

would give points to both Lisa and Patrick for generously giving time and help, but Bengal is thicker so I'm going with the candy, but rewriting the sentence to include other stripes too and see what client says.

Asker: Thanks Lisa and Patrick. I went down the candy stripe path - then remembered that an American friend called hospital workers Candy Stripers - both links are excellent and hugely helpful.

neutral  Patrick Hopkins: At least in US English "candy stripe" is very specific for those who assist in hospitals, so-called "Candy Stripers" because yes, their outfits are/were striped like this. So I would be afraid to use this term in any other context.

bengal stripe


Explanation:
The proper term is camicia bacchetta (two Cs), which refers to the vertical stripes.

Asker: I confirm "bacchette" with double c - sorry about the missing c - even my fingers were fed up typing this word after the ages I'd spent searching for it! Collar stays is also bacchette, but as you say, not in this case. Thank you anyway.
