L'urgence peut conduire l'assureur à accorder sa garantie sans avoir examiné la proposition d'assurance qui lui est soumise. Il ne donne alors qu'un accord provisoire en attendant l'examen du risque.

L'acceptation provisoire d'un risque ne produit d'effet que si la prime d'assurance a été réglée par l'assuré.

La note de couverture
L'assureur peut être amené à établir un contrat provisoire, soit en attendant d'étudier le risque de façon plus approfondie, soit en attendant l'établissement d'un contrat définitif. Il délivre alors un document appelé note de couverture. Il y est mis fin par l'établissement du contrat définitif. Si le contrat n'est pas conclu, elle cesse ses effets à la date prévue.
