Now into its fifth version, the WISC is a standard tool used by psychologists to get an idea of a child's cognitive ability. It is insufficient of itself to ascertain how "intelligent" a child is; it provides an indication of ability at the particular time, in the particular circumstances. Interpreting the results requires skill and experience. The basic idea is that "average" intelligence will give an overall reading of 100. In order to see where a child fits in, the QIT is a composite score of a number of various domains. It is not at all unusual for strengths and weaknesses to stand out. Depending on how much you know about stats and standard deviation, what you can read about the interpretation of the WISC will mean something to you... or not. Via the bell-curve diagram, the further you are away from the middle, the smaller the % of the population in that band. To the left, lower than average ability; to the right, higher than average ability.

The overall QIT score only really has any meaning when the results across all domains and subtests are homogenous. It is not at all unusual for results to be heterogeneous. That is when particular training and experience is required in interpreting the results. Their relevance will be helpful when other tests and clinical observations are taken into account, and always, only relevant for that particular child, at that particular moment, in those particular circumstances.
