Perhaps my last posting was unclear; this isn't a "taster" for a web design course; there is no "task" to do.

Even if you are not training to be Formula One racing driver, you still need to learn the basics of driving, like what is a steering wheel and the basics of shifting gears, not some poetry / empty waffling about best colours for cars... that's not going to give you any idea about what is driving!

This task is clear: students are given the "visual design" i.e. how the web page is supposed to look like, and they have to use the right HTML code to obtain that look.

I have realised that, as the context is examples of things a student might do as learning activities and these just happen to be taken from an IT context (probably because most of the students this is aimed at will go on to take courses in that field), there is no need to worry too much about accurately translating this particular term. In fact, I could substitute anything vaguely similarly techy-sounding that an IT student might do as a learning activity. So, what would be IT-speak for integrating a templatey/skinny thing into a web-page?

I would steer clear of “template” in this context, and go for something more general.

Some web-design applications might have a “template” tool to assist users in the creation of their web pages, in the same way as we can build templates in Word (which most users never learn to use properly…). Some web-building apps such as WordPress come with a set of pre-programmed “templates” (AKA “skins”), and many more are available on the web for free or for cash. But there is no “template” (or “skin”) as such on the web-server. Instead there is (usually) one and often several CSS (cascading style sheet) files that contain instructions on how to display individual parts of the displayed page, each of which is tagged appropriately.

That looks like it might fit. However, are you sure that would be called a "template" in English? I'm afraid I know nothing about web design.

The rest of the list would only help if there were an underlying logic and progression. In fact, however, there isn't. It's a list of activities given to the students for them to select the ones that are valid learning goals. Not all of those students will even be pursuing IT courses.

If we had sight of the entire list of "activities" we might be able to "zoom in" on what "maquette" is supposed to mean here, by a process of elimination via à vis other items in the list.

For example, "maquette" might be a reference to "templates" (as suggested by Tony, although he talks about DTP, not web design) - but that'd be less likely if there's already a clear reference to CSS (style sheets) in the list.
