Bartlett) UNCHOKABLE PUMPS When pumps are to be used for foul sewage, it is either necessary to ensure that they have special ‘unchokable’ impellers, capable of passing comparatively large solids, or the inlets to the pumps must be fitted with protective screens. Centrifugal pumps can be designed to be more or less unchokable, but the higher efficiency impellers of axial-flow and mixed-flow pumps must be protected if they are to be used for crude sewage. No pump is entirely unchokable, but most sewage pump manufacturers produce a range of pumps in the smaller and medium sizes which will pass a 100-mm ball. This is generally considered the standard required for a pump to be suitable for crude sewage. The efficiency of these pumps is less than those with more complex impellers, but it is usually preferable to forgo some efficiency for the sake of reliability in service. For pump sizes up to about 250mm (nominal suction diameter), the use of unchokable pumps is now almost universal when handling foul sewage. The usual unchokable impeller has only one or two blades set tangentially across the eye so that there is no leading edge. It is the leading edge of a conventional impeller which tends to collect string and rags which can build up and eventually cause a blockage. In a truly unchokable pump the shaft will therefore not extend through the eye of the impeller, and it is supported by one radial and one radial-thrust bearing, the radial bearing being placed as close to the stuffing box as is feasible. When a pump is not of the ‘split casing’ type, a hand hole should be provided on either the pump casing or on the inlet bend to facilitate the clearing of any obstruction at the impeller. BSCP 2005 recommends that ‘for small to medium capacities, the centrifugal pump should be of the unchokable type, when any solid, up to a maximum of about 100-mm diameter sphere, that may enter the pump suction will be passed through the pump’. There is, however, a limit to the size of unchokable pumps, and for larger flows some form of screening will be necessary; these screens should preferably be of the automatically controlled, mechanically raked type, with bars at ‘medium’ spacing, i.e. about 10- to 20-mm clear opening. |
