The effect of ascorbic acid was examined on various death pathways of mouse T cells.
Unlike humans, mice produce their own ascorbic acid and this study evaluated the mechanism by which ascorbic acid enhances systemic immune system.
These data show that three T cell death pathways (growth factor withdrawal-, spontaneous-, and steroid-induced death) were inhibited when T cells were incubated with ascorbic acid (300-400 µg/ml).
Both activated and resting T cells resulted to be responsive to ascorbic acid since both populations were resistant to death stimuli when treated with ascorbic acid (see figure 1).

LN=lymph nodes; CTM=complete tumor medium; SEM= standard error of mean.
Resting T cells were removed from LN and spleens of female B10.BR mice.
The T cells were cultured at a concentration of 5x105 cells per well in 200µl of CTM.
Cell death was measured by straining the samples with propidium iodide and then analyzing them by flow cytometry.
